Bike Art, an exhibition of works of art made from bicycles by Dorian McGowan, opens on January 12 and will be on view through February 29.
The endlessly inventive and imaginative McGowan finds beauty and inspiration in discarded bicycle chains, seats, and gears. His work is often whimsical, often comical, and often startlingly beautiful.
McGowan says of his work, "Why would anyone do bicycle art? Ever heard the expression "ignorance is bliss"? Well, that's the clue. If you don't understand the form you are working with or the function of its various parts, you have FREEDOM. Chains and their exquisite links wrap around things to define them. Gears designate time and can move into infinity. A bicycle seat (such an erotic form) can look like the face of a bull, an African mask, or anything your evil little mind can conjure. There is a frog with bulging eyes, looking like part of a Kwakiutl totem and I have no idea what bicycle part influenced it, but freedom of the imagination is the key. So, not knowing leads to creativity . . . Ignorance is bliss!"
The Guild is open from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm Monday through Saturday. For more information, call 802-748-9158.
